(Before you read, here is a note from David in Feb 2021.)
You are in a relationship with your writing.
Is it a bad one or a good one?
A bad relationship is one where you fell in love long go but now you are in a holding pattern and putting nothing fresh into it. You are only living on the memories of the good times. You are not moving forward, the writing isn’t moving forward, and you are not letting go.
A good relationship is one where you are doing the work, it is growing, and you are growing. There are times that it is rough, when you are not seeing eye to eye but you are in it for the long haul so you keep at it a day at a time.
If you are in a bad relationship, you have a choice. Start spending the time and paying into it or quit hanging onto what was only a puppy love in the past. You are wasting your energy trying to hold onto both.
No relationship survives in fear and worry.
If it’s worth it, then put the time, patience, and work that is required. Remember, you are doing what you love each and every day.
